Most disappointing landscapes are not badly installed. They are badly planned. Beds shaped to fit whatever plants were on the truck, a patio two feet narrower than the furniture needs, shrubs that looked right the first year and swallowed the walkway by the fourth. Designing first costs less than fixing later, and it lets you make decisions while they are still cheap to make.
Working with a landscape designer before the crews arrive is what separates a plan from a plant order. You see a 2D landscape rendering of the finished space, with real dimensions and mature plant sizes, and you get to move things while moving them is free.
Our design work covers planting plans, bed layout and edging, grading and drainage, lighting, and how all of it connects to the hardscape installation in the same space. We plan for mature size, for how the yard is actually walked, and for the maintenance load you want to live with. If you would rather not spend Saturdays pruning, we will say so in the design and choose accordingly.
The Process
How Our Design Process Works
Step 01
Consultation on site
We walk the property with you, listen to how you want to use the space, and talk through what the site will and will not support. Drainage, sun, grade, and access all shape what is realistic.
Step 02
Video and measurements
We record video of the space and take full measurements, so the design is built against real dimensions instead of a rough sketch. This is also where we note utilities, downspouts, and existing plant material worth keeping.
Step 03
2D design presentation
Depending on the size of the project, we produce a 2D design and present it to you: layout, hardscape materials, plant palette, and how the phases fit together if you are building over time.
Step 04
Build and follow-through
Our own crews install the design. Nothing gets handed off to a subcontractor who was not in the planning conversation, and we stay on the property until the punch list is clear.
What We Design
Planting, Grading, Lighting, and Everything Between
A design is only useful if it survives contact with the site. We check where water goes in a heavy rain, how much sun a bed really gets in July, and how close we are to utilities before committing a layout.
Once the design is installed, keeping it looking designed is its own discipline. Mulch top dressing, trimming on the right schedule, and weed control are handled through landscape maintenance. Fall leaf removal keeps the new beds from sitting under a wet mat through their first winter.

Landscape Design FAQs
Small projects are typically designed as part of the estimate. Larger builds that require a full 2D plan carry a design fee, which we tell you up front and credit toward the installation when you move forward with us.
Usually one to three weeks from the on-site consultation to the design presentation, depending on the size of the project and how busy the season is. Spring is the longest lead time of the year.
Yes, and it is often the smart way to do a large yard. We design the whole space once, then sequence it so each phase is finished and usable rather than leaving the yard mid-project for a season.
Whenever they are healthy and in a sensible spot. Mature trees and established shrubs are worth building around. We will tell you plainly when something is declining or planted somewhere it will never do well.
